Overview: 

This course is about children's play and how it may be used effectively in early childhood programmes. It introduces students to the theories that regard play as the medium of learning and the value of play in young children’s development. The general characteristics of play, its developmental aspects, the types and patterns of play as well as appropriate play materials are explored. Ways for fostering healthy living, creative expression, communication, cognitive competence and social emotional learning are considered. Also examined are the roles of the adult in setting up motivating and challenging play environments and in supporting play through interactions with the children.
