Overview: 

The course offers an overview of language and literacy development in young children, introducing students to a critical examination of significant theories and research. Factors influencing language and literacy for children 0 - 4 and 4 – 6 years old are explored, and their implication for planning and instruction are addressed. Students will be introduced to literacy indicators and behaviours as well as assessment of progress. Goals of a literacy curriculum are identified. Literacy principles, practices and processes are explored as well as implementation and evaluation strategies. Students will acquire the necessary skills to translate theory and research into practice by developing appropriate experience and programmes for different settings.
